Richard Strauss wrote Enoch Arden, a melodrama for piano and narrator in 1897. Based on a poem by Alfred Tennyson, it tells the tragic story of a sailor who was missing for ten years and returned home to find his wife happily married to another man. He never revealed his presence and died of a broken heart. It is a truly magnificent work which deserves greater prominence on the concert platform. In this second concert arranged by Andreas Haefliger, there are no artists better suited to performing it than Haefliger himself and the world renowned actor, Heinz Marecek.

Having appeared at the Edinburgh and Salzburg Festivals, amongst a myriad others, the extraordinarily gifted Kuss Quartet again takes the Two Moors stage for a performance of Brahms’s B flat major String Quartet. Written in 1876, the quartet reflects the composer’s longHeinz Maracek association with the Vienna woods.

This concert is supported by Exeter & District Classical Music Trust
