The pre-Lieder recital lecture concerts have proved to be a high
spot within the festival. Designed to encourage more people to
brave the song cycle genre, they give an insight into the poetry
on which the songs were based and how they were written.
This year’s concert is in preparation for Schubert’s marathon
song cycle Schwanengesang (to be performed in Okehampton
on the 4th October). Young soprano Victoria Barton, Harvey
Davies and presenter, Penny Adie will explore some of the
songs in an informal way and hope that the audience will join in
the discussion during the programme. A questionable point is
whether the songs, written for a man, can be sung by a woman…
